The Library

The library is probably still your best source of in-depth information on most topics. A library is also probably one of the most misunderstood places in the academic institution. Many complain that they fail to get the information they want when they visit the library and thus say that the library is not good. In most cases, however, this happens due to the users’ own shortcomings.

There are a few things you need to remember when using a library.

Firstly, a library is a collection of an assortment of items ranging from books to electronically recorded material. Our library have more than one millions items but mostly in electronic format, not just books. When you have that many things in your collection, you need some way to organise them, and we do this by dividing the items into categories: books, journals, e-books, video tapes, et cetera – all of which are placed together in their respective collections. Each of these collections are then divided into subject areas (Library of Congress Classification Scheme – see the classification system below) . So just because you have a notion that one subject should be near another, it does not mean that they will be. To help you on finding items in library  just click our library catalog:

Secondly, items in the libraries can be borrowed and people do borrow them. So just because the computers says that a certain book can be found on a particular shelf, it does not mean that it will be there when you get there because others may have beaten you to it. This is where the online reservation forms come in useful.

Oiling the study gears

FOR any student studying is comparable to surgery with out enough tools and resources one is bound to suffer Not having your materials when you need them affects your academic pursuit.

Multimedia University (MMU) is fully aware of this and has taken steps to ensure its students always have sufficient resources at hand. In this day and age this means being connected to the world and having access to a great library.

The Internet has always been central to MMU even back when it was the Institut Telekomunikasi dan Teknologi Maklumat ITTM in Bukit Beruang Malacca ITTM students had Internet access in their dormitory rooms.

This commitment continues today In the last three years MMU has upgraded its Internet bandwidth five times it now offers a total band width of 289 Mbps. However the thing about bandwidth is that it is never enough. MMU thus intends to live up to its name and is currently implementing TM s UniFi wireless broadband in both MMU campuses.

Another repository of resources in a university is the library. Being an academic library you would find 133 000 copies of printed books, 47 302 e-Books, 1 2 million theses, 47 online and offline databases, 27 000 electronic titles, 370 printed journals and 2 513 institutional repositories.

The university also subscribes for both campuses 10 newspaper titles daily as well as 411 magazine titles. Of course all of this resources would mean nothing if MMU students didn’t use them. They do, with satisfying results.

MMU’s tracer studies have revealed that more than 90% of its graduates secure employment within six months of completing their studies. In recognition of MMU’s efforts, the Malaysian Qualifications Agency, in its
2009 Rating System for Institutions of Higher Learning (Setara) placed MMU in the Excellent (Tier 5) rank. This firmly cements MMU’s position among the top universities in Malaysia.

Candidates are invited to apply to MMU for the June 2011 intake in the fields of Engineering, Information Technology, Business and Management, Creative
Multimedia, Accounting, Law and Life Sciences.

MMU’s R&D focus

Multimedia University is thoroughly committed to research and development in IT and communication

Tou

FOR many SPM leavers, the difficulty in choosing a university could be resolved by using two guiding principles in the decision-making process. First, your university must prepare you for the real working world. Second, the quality of teaching staff in a university is extremely important. For the first principle, Multimedia University (MMU) does incredibly well, thanks to its research and development (R&D) focus. Prof Dr Tou Teck Yong, vice-president (R&D) of MMU, describes R&D as “activities where students and academic staff participate in understanding and solving problems, and in the process, create new knowledge’.

“R&D is central to being a university,” he says. “A university with weak R&D will never be a top university. MMU is thoroughly committed to R&D in the fields of IT and communication.”

Tou describes the world as irreversibly enmeshed in IT and communication. Take away these two elements, and the world will be thrown back 20 or 30 years. As such, it makes sense to integrate IT, communication and multimedia into the subjects taught at university. MMU has researched into how to do this, and now integrates IT, communication and multimedia into its programmes.

For the second principle involving the quality of academic staff, MMU again shines due to its R&D focus. Contrary to popular belief, R&D is not just about researchers in laboratories wearing white coats.

“Researchers, especially senior ones with the title of professor, should not be hiding in their rooms,” says Tou. “They should be walking around campus, talking to students, being available. This is because they’re expected not only to teach and create new knowledge, but they’re expected to provide leadership and to inspire. They have to be more than teachers in schools. They have a duty to society.”

MMU’s approach has resulted in more than 90% of its graduates securing employment within six months of graduation. The Ministry of Higher Education, in its 2009 Rating System for Institutions of Higher Learning placed MMU in the Excellent (Tier-5) rank. This cements MMU’s position among the top universities in Malaysia.

Candidates are invited to apply to MMU for the January 2011 intake in the fields of Engineering, Information Technology, Business and Management, Creative Multimedia, Accounting and Bio-Informatics.

MMU Named Top Private Malaysian University

Putrajaya, 12 July 2010 – The Minister of Higher Education, Datuk Seri Mohamed Khaled Nordin, yesterday announced eighteen top Malaysian universities. According to the rankings released to Bernama, topping the public universities was International Islamic University Malaysia. Leading the category for private institutions was Multimedia University. Professor Dr. Zaharin bin Yusoff, President of MMU, admitted his surprise at the news. “Like any university in Malaysia,” he said, “we’re just trying to do what is best for our students and our stakeholders.”

“Our strategies so far have included formulating the best academic programmes we could think of, and creating an environment to produce the most marketable graduates in the country. I am pleased that the people whose opinions we care for agree that we’re doing the right thing,” Prof. Zaharin said.

The ranking system categorized institutions into one of six tiers. “Tier-6” or Distinction, “Tier-5” (Excellent), “Tier-4” (Very Good), “Tier-3” (Good), “Tier-2” (Satisfactory), or “Tier-1” (Weak). MMU is in Tier-5, along with 17 other institutions. 25 universities are in Tier-4, and four in Tier-3. However, Prof. Zaharin is quick to stress that MMU must not allow this achievement to “get to our heads”, as other private universities in Malaysia are also extremely capable. He cautions, “If anything, this announcement will only spur others to try and knock us off the top.”

“We must pay attention to the fact that absolutely no university earned Tier-6, no one got Distinction. This means there is still room for improvement for everyone, MMU included,” Prof. Zaharin said. The ranking is formally known as the Rating System for Institutions of Higher Learning (Setara), and is outlined by the Malaysian Qualifications Agency (MQA). 2009’s exercise was led by Prof. Muhammad Jantan of Universiti Sains Malaysia. The system assessed 25 criteria covering the input, process, and output of the universities. This is the first time the rankings covered both public and private universities.

Public universities in Tier-5 are International Islamic University Malaysia, Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia, Universiti Malaya, Universiti Putra Malaysia, Universiti Sains Malaysia, Universiti Teknologi Malaysia and Universiti Teknologi Mara.

Private Tier-5 institutions are Multimedia University, Universiti Kuala Lumpur, Universiti Teknologi Petronas, Sunway University College, Curtin University of Technology (Sarawak campus), Monash University (Sunway campus), Taylor’s University College, International Medical University, Swinburne University of Technology (Sarawak campus), Nottingham University (Malaysian campus) and Management and Science University.
